Music to My Ears

November 29th, 2007

It’s funny how often I read something, see something, experience something at what seems to be the exact right moment. For awhile I thought that I probably read, saw, and experienced many things and only noticed those that meant something to me at that particular time. However, the extreme amount of “syncronicities” that happen in my life has convinced me otherwise.

A few quotes that I’ve recently read at the exact right moment:

Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it is time to pause and reflect.
- Mark Twain

Anyone who lives within their means suffers from a lack of imagination.
- Oscar Wilde

Everything popular is wrong.
- Oscar Wilde

Many a false step was made by standing still.
- Fortune Cookie

Named must your fear be before banish it you can.
- Yoda

Action may not always bring happiness, but there is no happiness without action.
- Benjamin Disraeli

Life is too short to be small.
- Benjamin Disraeli

There’s beauty in the breakdown.
- Imogen Heap

Human, Slightly Broken

November 14th, 2007

I spent this past weekend in South Carolina on Sullivans Island and Isle of Palms playing 2 shows with a great group from Nashville called the No Hit Wonders Songwriters Tour. Ironically, it’s not even a slight exaggeration to say that most of their songs should be Number 1 hits on country and pop radio. The “thing” that separates this group from other groups and artists that I play with is that not only is the songwriting on such a high level but also the performances. Each individual pours emotion during every song. It wouldn’t make a difference if there were 5 or 500 people in the audience…it’s all honest and all natural…very rare traits.

Credit is due to my business partner, Nathan Heleine, for the title of this post, Human, Slightly Broken. That’s about as close to a description of events/feelings in my life right now. I’m in a place of great perplexity/confusion. However, it’s from theses places that we learn the most and I’m actually enjoying the process. I’m reminded of my 1 year in Philadelphia where I was so poor that I literally could not afford to buy a burrito. It was a year of great tribulation but has proven to be the most important year of my life to this point. The experience and perspective I gained is incalculable.

We were “put-up” in a beautiful beach house on Isle of Palms for the weekend and they gave us an Audi to drive. I have to say that the Audi didn’t feel much different from my Saturn except it had many more buttons on the dashboard. Here are some pictures that I think speak a whole lot more than words:
