Plane Thoughts

January 7th, 2006

I was flying from Buffalo, NY to Atlanta, GA last week sitting between two women. The woman on my left was probably in her mid-50s and the woman on my right around 19. This 19-year-old made me very uncomfortable. She was one of those people who tell you their entire life story when you ask them one simple question. However, the woman on my left made me very comfortable. She was one of those people that makes you feel like you are home for the holidays, like a nurse who amazingly acts both as your mother and your significant other at the same time. These two women had numerous conversations during the course of our flight. (with me in the middle) Everytime the 19-year-old spoke I thought, “How can the 50-year-old stand talking to this girl?” Well, as we were making our descent, it occurred to me that I was the immature one. (soooo…I’m the tardy one?) The 19-year-old was entirely positive and friendly the entire time. She rarely complained and smiled much. I realized that the 50-year-old woman was much wiser than me. She was able to deal with this 19-year-old as if they had been friends for a long time. I didn’t even give the 19-year-old a chance. I realized that regardless of what my personal comforts might be, if someone is nice then I need to get past my discomforts and extend them the same friendliness. My great friend, Alex Hamlin, turned me on to the following book. It has helped me greatly with the importance of taking time to consider the other person’s point of view.

Unrelated to the story above, the following link is worthy of some praise. You choose a favorite artist and the “audio player” finds similar sounding artists. So far, the “similar sounding artists” that have come up I haven’t heard of. Now I won’t have to call Grey Mcmurray every week and ask him for new music suggestions. Maybe I still will.
